Fillers Q & A

What are fillers?

Fillers are gel-like substances injected beneath the skin to boost volume and fill in wrinkles. These injectables can rejuvenate the skin, contour and define areas that have lost structure, and improve facial symmetry. Fillers take only a few minutes to administer and require almost no downtime.

Derm One offers multiple popular filler options, including Juvéderm® and Restylane®, to ensure patients have a range of choices.

Are fillers the same as Botox®?

While fillers and Botox treat fine lines and wrinkles, they target different types.

Static wrinkles

Fillers plump up the skin to address static wrinkles, which develop from volume loss. These wrinkles tend to be deep and occur in the lower face. Nasolabial folds (around the mouth), hollow temples, and sunken cheeks are common treatment areas for dermal fillers.

Aging adults aren’t the only people who can take advantage of fillers. These substances can also enhance thinning lips, sharpen a weak jawline, and refine the cheekbones for a contoured look.

Dynamic wrinkles

Botox and other neuromodulators treat dynamic wrinkles, which develop from repeated expressions. Frowning, squinting, and smiling cause dynamic lines to form around the eyes, forehead, and upper face. Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles responsible for wrinkles, allowing the lines to soften.

How should I prepare for fillers?

Fillers usually don’t require much preparation, but taking a few simple steps can ensure a smooth appointment, including:

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements
  • Share your medical history
  • Ask any questions or share your concerns
  • Follow post-treatment instructions

Your dermatologist may recommend taking Arnica tablets to reduce bruising if you’re expecting multiple injection sites.

I’m getting fillers. What can I expect?

Fillers take about 15-30 minutes to inject, depending on your number of treatment areas. The team may apply a topical numbing cream before mapping out your injection sites and administering the treatment. Redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection sites should disappear within a few hours to days.

If you opt for HA fillers or Radiesse, you can expect immediate results. Sculptra can take several weeks to produce noticeable results, as it triggers new collagen formation.
